room-mate or not...?

am i missing out on anything by never having had a room-mate?
i mean, sure i've shared the room with poo for 2 months or so... but she's not someone i'd consider a room-mate. i could adopt that gurl and not feel weird!

college was at home.. post grad was single occupancy rooms *thank god for that!* and work was living by myself. i always felt that i wouldn't be able to share a room with anyone coz i need a lot of space.
but was watching will & grace last night *DON'T ask me why!* and wondered what it would have been like had i had roomies...

going by what i've heard my friends say of their roomies... i think most of them in real life are psycho.

anyone has anything nice to share about their roomies? anyone managed to be real close friends with a roomie? or is this another of those 'grass-being-greener' aspect that i can do without...?

Yes I think one does miss out if not had an experience of having a roommate.

Not ALL are psychos!!! Only most are. :p

My current best friend was my roommate once upon a time. I have met some really nice people that way.

it's a weird bond, your relationship with your roommates. you can't live with them, you can't live without them. but everyone should go through the experience once. :)

I never shared a room with anyone but shared the apt. Two out of three of my roommates I had are good friends..one a real close one. The third was absolute psycho.
Things that I most miss about having a room-mate is the girlie things we did together. After coming back from work we used to sit and eat junk food, gossip about people or crib about our respective boyfriends for hours :D We used to watch all mushy movies, sex and the city and such and then analyze them after that. Shopping was a lot of fun..even groceries!
There are always some problems..but then we need to make adjustments with parents/siblings/partner too if we are living with them. I love living alone but having the room-mate experience makes me appreciate how wonderful it is to live alone :)

i shared a room with my sis, does it count? :P

I agree with Galadriel; it's really a subjective thing. Yeah, some have the potential to become best friends, but because they are also roomies, one out of the two relations usually changes in some drastic way - you either cant be roomies anymore, or you cant be good friends anymore. And good friends, or good roomies, are both hard to come by.. Yeah yeah, you can prolly tell I have been burnt by the fire *wry smile*

Wow this topic is so close to my heart...
9 years of my life – from 17 until 26 – I have always had a roommate except for one year when I was in Dallas and was living on my own…
I have lived in dorms, hostel rooms, apartments, rented a booth bungalow coz somebody killed himself in the house and nobody was renting that place & we 13 girls in college got the sprawling bungalow real cheap …
I have stayed as a paying guest too …in all I have shared apartment/room with 50+ ppl and no I am not exaggerating ….

Now to ur qn – it has mostly been a pleasant experience having room mates.. late night chit chat.. movies.. pani poori …
When in college we have talked for 8-10 hrs at a stretch sitting around our dining table and we realized it is morning only when the birds started chirping …

I had never even lighted a stove in my life and one of my roomies taught me the ABCD’s of cooking and I still call her my saasu ma…
But couple of times there will be nok-jhoks for newspaper to which channel to watch to decision making on whether or not to consider somebody as a replacement for someone who had to leave (coz they got married or left for the US….this is the reason I have 50+ ex-room mates coz girls get married and move out or go on on-site assignments to the US)..

But I had a psycho room mate who came from a VERY rich family and didn't need anything but still stole money, dress, shoes etc and would put all blame on the poor bai ..
Accidentally I did some detective work( again roomie stuff – my colleague was her colleague's room mate and she used to stash her loot in their apartment and my colleague asked me y my roomie was storing her stuff in their apartment and I realized that all the stuff stashed was what me and my other roomies had lost !! and so caught her red-handed threw her out of the house….)

Sorry for such a looooooooooooooong comment ..
But as I mentioned before – this topic is so close to my heart …

I've had my share of roomies and I must say good or bad it's something one needs to experience. I had one bad one who used to cry at the drop of the hat and get up most ungodly hours possible and stare at the wall which at times scared the s*&^ out of me (hmm..maybe she was related to your friend poo:))But thankfully that lasted just a few months. Then I spent the best days as a roomie with one of my wacko crazy best friend and boy oh boy was it a blast!Apart from the fact that she decorated her side of the room with the lamest posters she could find she was so much fun.

roomies are great IF you have compatible hygeine habits!! I've had varied experiences, and you never know how it's going to turn out until you actually live together. it's a very high risk / high return sort of thing. but i agree with anon, you have one now!

:) I had a wonderful roomie.. lived together for over an year.. and had a great time through it.. she still remains one of my closest friends.. I had another roomie at the same time who we managed to throw out when she and her bf started making out in the living room every evening :P but otherwise she was no psycho...yeah having roomies is a fun experience.. must have? not sure!! but fun nevertheless.. think of all the late night gup shup, movies, mindless shopping and what not...

getting a good roommate is luck... and I must say I have been lucky enough to get good roommates till now.
All my roomies till now have been gr8 friends.. and I sometimes still share my thoughts with them, though we are live far apart in different cities

hmm... have had roomies at the time of post grad.. but cannot say we;re friends forever types... so not alywas we get something out of it... and you end up feeling you'd be better off without a roomie..

I've had housemates, not necessarily roomies. Oh, and dorm-mates. Dorm-mates were mostly a big pain... housemates... first timers weren't that great but the rest have been super nice!! And much like any other instance, you don't always end up being close friends just because you're spending time/sharing space a whole lot... but it's a great way to meet new people :)

like most things in life...rommies come in all shades...obnoxious to hilarious to cutie pies....like you i had also never had the chance to experience this novelty all my growing years. Its only when i left my husband and walked out that i did shift into a girl's hostel that I expereinced the thrills and chills of sharing a room with someone 24x7.

My expereince was okay...Lavanya and Prachi my first roommates were excellent. The next two were much younger than me and lived in their own world but were never a bother. So guess have to say...its worth giving a try once.
